Third Eye Blind
Third eye blind is an alternative rock band formed in the early 1990s that originated in San Fransisco. After massive success of their self titled debut album in 1997. The band had released a second album before their guitarist, Keven Cadogan had to be released. In effect, the move has faced a lot of controversy.
Stephan Jenkins, who plays the guitar and is the vocals for the band who also writes some of the songs. He is 44 years old and lives in Oakland California. He was listed in People magazine in the 50 most beautiful people list. He has either wrote, or helped write most of the bands major hits such as 'Never Let You go' 'Blinded' 'Losing a Whole Year' 'Graduate' and 'How's It Going to Be'. Stephan had grew up in Palo Alto, California where he attended Henry M. Gunn Senior High. He graduated as valedictorian of his class when he attended the University of California in 1987. He has a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) in English literature. Jenkins has also played in the movies 'Rock Star' and 'Art of Revenge'.
Third Eye Blinds drummers name is Brad Hargreves who is 28 years old. This is not third eye blinds first drummer. Before, they had Steve Bowman from the band Counting Crows. Brad first started playing the drums at the age of eight on a homemade drum set until he had saved up enough money to buy an actual drum set at the age of 13 which is around the time he started to take formal drum lessons under a jazz instructor. By playing jazz gigs, he was able to pay his way through college. He is a member of both Third Eye Blind and the band called Year Long Disaster, which is a hard rock band formed in Los Angeles that was formed in 2003, but Brad didn't join until 2004.
They have a second guitarist and his name is Tony Fredilanelli. He is 39 years old and was raised in Law Vegas. He was forced to quit the band because of financial issues with traveling, but later rejoined to become Third Eye Blinds lead guitarist and backup vocals. He was signed to Shrapnel records when he was only 17 years old. He had released a solo guitar album which was titled 'Breakneck Speed' and after that, Tony had become a major figure in the Las Vegas musical scene. His inspiration for learning to play the guitar was Jimi Hendrix when he did a performance at Woodstock, which afterwards Tony had picked up the guitar and learned it almost immediately.
There is a temporary bassist replacing Arion Salazar, but he will not be taking part in any recordings with the band.
The band had released two demo albums, one in 1993 and another in 1995, which after their second demo they had received a lot of attention from record labels. They currently have four albums, three Studio albums, one live album, and one album that has yet to be released.. Their first album was self titled album and contained 3 top 10s in the U.S Hot 100. Their second album, entitled 'Blue' which contained the song 'Never Let you Go' which made it to rank number 14 on the chart, but reached rank 4 on the US top 40 charts, and rank 3 on Adult Top 40. Their third album 'Out of the Vein' didn't have as much success as the first two, but still managed to acquire rank 35 on the US Modern Rock and Adult Top 40.
During the mid-90s, it was customary for the members of Third Eye Blind to have a pinata release candy over the mosh pits, but once at a showcase for the record executives, lead singer Stephan Jenkins release crickets instead. The band had acquired their name from a book that the lead singer had read that related to the minds eye, which is a mystical concept which may lead to inner realms, and spaces of higher consciousness. The other band members seemed to like the idea, and it had become the official name.
When their self-titled first album release, it had become an immediate success when released in 1997. It contained 5 singles, one of which hit rank number one on the Modern Rock Tracks and held that spot for 8 weeks. The album sold 6 million copies and has remained the most successful. when their second album,
Blue was released, it did not receive as much popularity as the first, and sold 150,000 copies during the first month, but acquired 1.25 million sales in all of the United States.
Blue had contained 4 singles on its track list.
From 2001 to 2002, after the band had been on a world tour, they took a break. It was a year off only playing for charity events. During the time, they had played for the Tiger Woods Foundation and a Breathe Benefit Concert in LA when Jenkins' mother happened to be diagnosed with breast cancer. While on the break, the band had gotten together and built a recording studio while they were anticipating their next album.
In 2003,
Out of the Vein was released. Two singles, 'Blinded' and 'Crystal Baller' were contained on the album. Even though the album contained many positive reviews, the album failed. With only 500,000 copies sold world wide, only one video was created for the song 'Blinded'. The album failed to get as much promotion as it should have as Elektra Records, which has been the record company for Third Eye Blind for much of their career, was being absorbed into Atlantic Records. Stephen said that he had worked really hard on
Out of the Vein but it didn't go well because Elektra was imploding as the record was in progress. They didn't have time to make a video, or do a marketing campaign for the CD.
Out of the Vein[i] was the best reviewed album that they had recorded.
Their is a fourth studio album coming out that is titled [i]Ursa Major which is to be released some time in the year of 2009 (this year) and has been rumored to come out in February of 2009, but as the CD isn't even complete, there is no possible way it will meet the date. The album has been anticipated since mid-2007 and was formerly named
The Hideous Strength. The album will be released under the Sony label.
During recent live performances, they have revealed a majority of the new tracks that were being worked on. Jenkins has stated that this album will be "more political" than the others, and claims that the album has taken so long to complete due to the fact that he has been having difficulties with the lyrics.
Recently there has been an announcement that there will be a fifth studio album released titled
Ursa Minor following Ursa Major, the constellation, in the fall.
Ursa Minor is said to contain tracks that just didn't quite make it onto
Ursa Major.
